‘We’ll line up with five men’ Postecoglou says no tactical changes against Man City

Head coach Enze Postecoglou will stick with the same tactics against Manchester City.

Tottenham Hotspur will host Manchester City in the 14th round of the 2023-24 Premier League (PL) season at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, on April 4 (1:30 p.m. ET). Spurs are in sixth place with eight wins, two draws, and three losses (26 points), while City is second in the league with nine wins, two draws, and two losses (29 points).

The big question ahead of the game is whether Postecoglou will stick with the same tactics against City. Since his arrival at Tottenham, Postecoglou has relied on a strong forward press and a high line to win the ball high up the pitch and then attack quickly.

However, there is a downside to this tactic. It leaves a lot of space at the back. Historically, Tottenham have been able to avoid exposing the back four with the quick feet of Christian Romero and Mickey van der Penne and the situational awareness of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. However, with both Romero and van der Penn out for the upcoming match against Man City, there is a risk of exposing the back four.

Of course, Postecoglou has shown that he is not one to back down. Against Chelsea on March 7, Tottenham formed their final defensive line on the halfway line without dropping back, despite having two men sent off. However, they ended up exposing the back four and went down 1-4.

At the time, Postecoglou was interviewed and revealed his philosophy. “Who we are, as long as I’m here, we’re going to do that. Even if we are down to five men, we will try,” he said, expressing strong confidence in his tactics. 무지개토토 도메인

Postecoglou’s philosophy hasn’t changed over time. “There will be a thorough review, but internally, the players and staff will know that I’m not changing,” he confidently explained on the UK’s It’s All Kicking Off program on March 24. Spurs maintained the high line against Wolverhampton and Aston Villa in subsequent games.

This time, however, it’s Man City. They have one of the best strikers in the world in Elling Holland, as well as in-form Jeremy Dockoo and Phil Foden. Teams that have played a high line against City in the past have usually collapsed due to exposed space in the back.

However, Postecoglou has no intention of changing his philosophy. In his pre-match interview, he said, “This is not the last game. I’m not trying to build a team to beat Man City. I’m trying to build a successful team. If that was enough, I wouldn’t be sitting here,” he said before the game, revealing that there would be no tactical changes.

“You can see how determined we are to play this tactic. All the best teams have gone through difficult times. They’ve all been doubted and criticized. How did they handle it? Where are the people who would have handled it differently now?” While the question of “why didn’t they change?” may seem tedious,
