United legend Charlton, who passed away last month, bids farewell at Old Trafford

The funeral of Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton, who passed away last month, was held at Old Trafford.

The club released a video of Charlton’s funeral at Old Trafford, the club’s home stadium, on its official website on Thursday (July 14). According to the BBC, more than 1,000 mourners traveled to Old Trafford.

Charlton was an iconic figure for United. He played for the club since his youth, making his first-team debut in 1956 and scoring 12 goals in 17 games.

He was a pillar of the club as it moved through the dark ages and into the golden age. One of only nine players to survive the Munich plane disaster in 1958, Charlton steadied a faltering United side under manager Matt Busby. He went on to form the most formidable trio in United’s history with Dennis Law and George Best, lifting the European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League) in the 1967-1968 season, the first ever for an English club.

Even after his playing days were over, Charlton was a United man. Since 1984, he has been the club’s technical director, helping the club through another dark period and then through two decades of glory under Sir Alex Ferguson. In 2016, the club honored him by naming the south stand of the stadium the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand.

Following the news of Charlton’s death, the club honored him with a week of pre-match silence. There was an online and offline book of condolences and a place of worship in front of the United Trinity statue of Charlton, Law and Best. 보스토토

United truly said goodbye to a legend with the funeral today. In attendance were managers and players who shaped United’s era around 2000, including Ferguson, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Current players such as Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw were also in attendance, as well as England manager Gareth Southgate.

Former United manager David Gill said: “Charlton was a legend, an icon, a dear man. A loyal and much loved colleague and friend. Football is a very local sport, but Charlton had a global reputation. His name has become synonymous with English football,” he said, paying tribute to Charlton’s iconic status for United and English football.

On his final visit to Old Trafford, Charlton was taken through the city of Manchester and laid to rest in the cathedral.
