Bassett’s big inning, 7th-inning explosion help Toronto beat Oakland to clinch WC title
The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the postseason hunt.
The Blue Jays defeated the Oakland Athletics 7-1 on Saturday at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, California, USA.
With the win, Toronto clinched the series against Oakland and moved into sole possession of the third wild-card spot in the American League with a 77-62 record, ahead of the Texas Rangers, who fell to the Houston Astros 1-14 on the same day.
It was a close game to start. It was a tight pitching battle. Both starters pitched well. Toronto starter Creve Bassett, who was visiting his hometown of Oakland, and Oakland starter Ken Waldichuck balanced each other out with scoreless innings.
Bassitt gave up leadoff singles in the first and second innings, but both were retired. In the fourth, he gave up a double to Zach Gellows in right-center field, but he was stranded.
Waldichuck gave up a double to Alejandro Kirk in the second and a single to Santiago Espinal in the third. He induced double plays in the first and sixth innings to get out of trouble.
Waldichuck left the mound first. His final line was six innings, four hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
The balance was broken in the top of the seventh when Oakland turned to its bullpen. Zach Neill was pulled after allowing three hits and a walk. Toronto capitalized on the opportunity. Against reliever Sam Long, Kevin Kiermaier singled to left, George Springer doubled to center, and Davis Schneider hit a two-run double off the left-field wall to score four runs in quick succession.
The Oakland bench opted to walk Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with runners on second and third, but a sacrifice fly by Upper Merrifield put them back in scoring position. Back-to-back walks allowed another run to score.메이저놀이터
In the top of the seventh inning alone, the offense went full circle, sending 12 batters to the plate.
Bassett stayed on the mound the rest of the way. He gave up back-to-back singles to Seth Brown and Jordan Diaz in the seventh inning, but that didn’t stop the rally. The bats came right back with a run in the top of the eighth.
Bassett improved to 14-7 on the year, allowing one run on eight hits and seven walks while striking out seven. He lowered his season ERA to 3.69.
